Old Fashioned Cream Soda
by Whip
This is essentially liquid candy with minimal nutritional value and concerning additives. The combination of high sugar content, artificial preservatives, and potentially carcinogenic caramel color makes this a poor choice for regular consumption.
- Carbonated Water – safe · Water infused with carbon dioxide gas to create carbonation. Safe and provides hydration though less efficiently than still water.
- Cane Sugar – controversial · Natural sugar that rapidly spikes blood glucose and insulin levels. While better than high fructose corn syrup, still contributes to metabolic dysfunction when consumed regularly.
- Sodium Benzoate – controversial · Chemical preservative that can form benzene (a known carcinogen) when combined with vitamin C or citric acid under certain conditions. Also linked to hyperactivity in children.
- Natural Flavors – safe · Flavor compounds derived from natural sources but chemically processed. Generally safe though the specific compounds are proprietary and unknown.
- Caramel Color – controversial · Manufactured coloring agent that may contain 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI), a compound linked to cancer risk in animal studies. Class IV caramel color is most concerning.
- Citric Acid – safe · Natural acid that enhances flavor and acts as a mild preservative. Generally safe and commonly found in citrus fruits.
