Sweetened Corn & Oat Cereal
by Post Consumer
A heavily processed breakfast cereal with added sugars as the second ingredient. While fortified with vitamins and containing some whole grain oats, the high sugar content and ultra-processing make it a poor choice for daily consumption.
- Corn Flour – controversial · Refined corn flour lacks fiber and nutrients of whole corn. High glycemic impact and may contain pesticide residues.
- Sugar – dangerous · Added refined sugar as second ingredient drives blood sugar spikes, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction when consumed regularly.
- Whole Grain Oat Flour – beneficial · Contains beta-glucan fiber which supports heart health and blood sugar control. The most nutritious ingredient in this cereal.
- Modified Corn Starch – controversial · Chemically modified starch that may disrupt gut bacteria and has higher glycemic impact than native starch.
- Honey – controversial · Natural sweetener but still drives blood sugar spikes. Marketing as 'natural' doesn't negate metabolic impact.
- Salt – safe · Minimal amount used for flavor enhancement. Not a health concern at this level.
- Turmeric – beneficial · Natural coloring agent with anti-inflammatory properties. One of the healthiest ingredients present.
- Wheat Starch – controversial · Refined wheat component that may cause gut irritation in sensitive individuals and adds to glycemic load.
- Thiamin Mononitrate – safe · Synthetic vitamin B1 added for fortification. Generally well-tolerated and necessary due to processing losses.
- Riboflavin – safe · Vitamin B2 fortification to replace nutrients lost in processing.
- Niacinamide – safe · Form of niacin (B3) used in fortification. Well-tolerated synthetic vitamin.
- Pyridoxine Hydrochloride – safe · Synthetic vitamin B6 for fortification. Generally safe at fortification levels.
- Folic Acid – safe · Synthetic folate required for grain fortification. Important for preventing neural tube defects.
- Vitamin B-12 – beneficial · Essential vitamin often deficient in diets. Fortification provides meaningful nutritional benefit.
- Vitamin A Palmitate – safe · Synthetic vitamin A used in fortification. Stable form for processed foods.
- Sodium Ascorbate – safe · Buffered form of vitamin C used in fortification. Less acidic than ascorbic acid.
- Vitamin D – beneficial · Essential vitamin often deficient in modern diets. Fortification provides health benefit.
- Reduced Iron – safe · Iron fortification to address common deficiency. Reduced iron is well-absorbed form.
- Zinc Oxide – safe · Zinc fortification for immune and metabolic support. Zinc oxide is stable in processed foods.
